Are Wegovy and Ozempic The Same Medication?

Yes, Wegovy® and Ozempic® are the brand (trade) names of the medication Semaglutide, a GLP1-receptor agonist.  However, there are two major differences: the FDA-indication and the dosing.  Wegovy is FDA-approved for weight loss while Ozempic is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes.  The dosing of Wegovy and Ozempic are similar, but the maximum dose of Wegovy is 2.4 mg compared to 2 mg of Ozempic.  Soon after Wegovy came on the market, there were issues with the medication’s supply, and many patients were unable to continue taking or even start the medication.  As a result, Ozempic more recently has been used as an alternative to Wegovy for weight loss while Wegovy is not in stock.
