Can You Drink Alcohol on Contrave (naltrexone/bupropion)?

Typically it is recommended to limit or avoid alcohol while taking Contrave®. There are particular safety concerns regarding alcohol and Contrave. For example, Contrave can lower a person’s alcohol tolerance making them more susceptible to the effects of alcohol than they normally would be. Also, there is an increased risk for seizures when combining alcohol and Contrave. Keep in mind that an individual’s medical history and other medications they may be taking can further increase this risk which is why it is important to review this information with your medical provider before starting Contrave for weight loss. Importantly, if you drink heavily or have abruptly stopped drinking alcohol after chronic use, Contrave is contraindicated. If you have any questions about your alcohol intake and safety of taking Contrave, discuss this with your medical provider before starting the medication.
