How Do You Use an Ozempic (Semaglutide) Pen?

Ozempic® is an injectable medication that contains multiple doses in one single pen requiring you to use a new needle for each injection.  To get started, first check to make sure you have the correct medication, it is not expired, and that the medication is clear and colorless.  Take a new needle (provided in your Ozempic box) and remove the paper tab.  Push the needle straight onto the pen and twist to tighten, then pull off the outer needle cap and then the inner needle cap.  If you are using a new Ozempic pen for the first time you will need to check the flow.  To do this, holding the needle so it is pointing upwards, press and hold the dose button until the dose pointer lines up to 0 and you’ll see a drop of Ozempic at the tip of the needle.  Now, turn the dose selector to the dose you are intending to take, such as 0.25 mg.  Clean the area where you plan to give yourself your injection (stomach, thigh or back of the upper arm) and insert the needle into the skin so that you can see the dose counter.  Press and hold the dose button until the dose counter shows 0 (you may also hear or feel a “click” at that time).  Continue to hold the needle in the skin and count to 6 before removing the needle to ensure you get the full dose. This video demonstrates how to give yourself the injection, and you can always reach out to your healthcare provider with any additional questions.
